World Cup 2026 Round of 32 — How It Works, Format & Schedule
The Round of 32 is the first knockout round of the 2026 World Cup and a brand-new stage created for the 48-team format. It runs June 28 – July 3, 2026: 32 teams, 16 single-elimination matches, no draws. Below is how teams qualify for it, the full knockout calendar, the bracket structure, and a free simulator to map your own route to the final.
How does the Round of 32 work?
Because 2026 is the first 48-team World Cup, FIFA added a Round of 32 before the old Round of 16. The 12 groups (A–L) each send their top two teams — that is 24 sides — plus the eight best third-placed teams across all groups, making 32. Every Round of 32 tie is single-elimination: 90 minutes, then extra time, then penalties if still level. The 16 winners advance to the Round of 16.
Who qualifies for the Round of 32?
Winners and runners-up of Groups A through L qualify automatically (24 teams). The four remaining spots go to the best four of the eight third-placed teams, ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. So a third-place finish can still be enough to reach the knockout stage — the single biggest change from the old 32-team format.
