What Mirassol need to eliminate LDU in the Libertadores
After conceding a late equaliser against LDU, Mirassol go into the second leg without an advantage in their Libertadores round-of-16 tie. To progress, they must win in normal time; another draw would send the tie to penalties.
Mirassol need to beat LDU in the second leg
The late equaliser left Mirassol and LDU level after the first leg of their Libertadores round-of-16 tie. The equation is therefore straightforward for the Brazilian side: a win in the second leg guarantees qualification for the next round. It does not matter whether they win by one goal or a wider margin. Mirassol do not need to overturn an aggregate deficit, but they must turn a match that had been under control into a positive result in the second meeting.
Another draw against LDU would lead to penalties
If Mirassol and LDU draw again after 90 minutes, the place in the next round will be decided by a penalty shoot-out. The late equaliser changed precisely this aspect of the situation. Before it, Mirassol would have taken an advantage into the second leg. Now, there is no aggregate margin. A draw by any score would leave the teams level and send the tie to penalties. To avoid that risk, Mirassol must pursue victory before the final whistle.
Defeat would eliminate Mirassol from the Libertadores
A defeat in the second leg would send LDU through and end Mirassol’s Libertadores campaign in the round of 16. With the first meeting ending in a draw, the second leg effectively becomes a direct decider. LDU will progress if they win in normal time. Mirassol will progress if they win. If neither side wins, the tie will be decided on penalties. There is no longer any first-leg result to protect Mirassol: the late goal cancelled out the advantage that could have counted on aggregate.
The late equaliser changes the approach to the decisive match
Mirassol will have to balance two demands in the second leg: attack to build a winning position while remaining defensively alert so they do not give LDU an advantage that would be difficult to recover from. The first-leg result does not allow them to manage the scoreline. At the same time, the team need not panic or chase a rout. A one-goal win is enough to eliminate LDU in normal time. The priority is to turn their strong attacking spell into a concrete advantage and avoid repeating the late-game lapse that led to the equaliser.
