Look for medical bulletins and club announcements to confirm injuries. For suspensions, consult Liga MX disciplinary records and the tournament’s card status, as a player may miss out through a red card, an accumulation of yellow cards or a subsequent sanction. International call-ups, travel and fitness problems reported after the previous match can also affect the lineup. Distinguish between a doubt and a confirmed absence: a doubt is a player with a chance of featuring; a confirmed absence is an officially ruled-out player.
How to analyse the formation after the lineup is announced
The initial list provides the names, but the actual formation is revealed by each player’s position. A 4-3-3 features four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards; a 4-2-3-1 uses two holding midfielders and three players behind a centre-forward. Note who protects the defence, who plays wide and whether there is a central attacking midfielder. A more attacking full-back may form a back three during build-up, while a winger may drop back to support the midfield. Therefore, compare the lineup with the roles seen in previous matches, not just the formation shown on paper.
