Home record in the Brasileirão: how to calculate and interpret it
A team’s home record shows how many points it earns as the home side in the Brasileirão. The statistic helps compare campaigns, understand the strength of each stadium and assess a team’s consistency.
What is a home record?
A home record is the percentage of points a club earns in matches played at home. In the Brasileirão’s league format, each win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 and a defeat 0. The calculation considers only matches played at home, even if home advantage was moved to another stadium.
How to calculate the percentage
Multiply the number of home matches by 3 to find the maximum possible points. Then divide the points earned by that total and multiply by 100. Example: a team with 10 home matches, 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat earns 23 points. Since it could have earned 30, its record is 23 divided by 30, multiplied by 100: 76.7%.
What is considered a good home record?
In a 38-match league season, each club plays 19 matches at home. A home record above 70% usually indicates a strong campaign: at least 40 points from a possible 57. Between 55% and 65%, the performance is competitive but may require a stronger away record. Below 50%, the team is dropping too many points at home and is likely to struggle in the table.
Why home advantage matters
The home side is usually more familiar with the pitch, stadium dimensions and logistics, while also benefiting from support from the crowd. Even so, home advantage does not guarantee a result. Stadium closures or empty stands due to sanctions, long journeys, a change of city, a congested schedule and a weak squad can all reduce that advantage.
How to use the statistic when analysing the Brasileirão
Compare the home record with away performances. A club that earns many points at home but few away may depend on its stadium to remain near the top of the table. It is also worth breaking the data down by half-season, opponents faced and stage of the campaign. A run of matches against league leaders does not carry the same weight as games against teams in the relegation zone.
