How to calculate points percentage in football: formula and examples
Points percentage in football shows how many points a team earned compared with the maximum possible. Learn how to calculate the percentage in league competitions and other tournament formats.
What is points percentage in football?
Points percentage is the ratio between the points earned and the total points a team could have collected. The result is usually shown as a percentage. The closer it is to 100%, the better the team’s performance over the period analysed.
Points percentage formula
The formula is: points percentage = points earned ÷ points available × 100. In a league competition, each win is worth 3 points, a draw is worth 1 and a defeat is worth 0. The maximum possible total is the number of matches multiplied by 3.
Example with wins, draws and defeats
If a team played 10 matches, winning 6, drawing 2 and losing 2, it earned 20 points: 6 × 3 + 2 × 1 = 20. The maximum possible total was 30 points, because there were 10 matches. Its points percentage was therefore 20 ÷ 30 × 100 = 66.67%.
Calculation using only the results
You can also use a direct formula: points percentage = (3 × number of wins + number of draws) ÷ (3 × number of matches) × 100. With 8 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats, the team earned 28 points out of a possible 45. Its points percentage was 62.22%.
How to calculate it in competitions with different scoring systems
The formula remains the same, but the maximum possible total changes according to the regulations. In tournaments awarding 2 points for a win, for example, the maximum is the number of matches multiplied by 2. In a stage decided by a penalty shoot-out, follow the competition rules: some award 2 points for a shoot-out win and 1 to the defeated team, while others record only the result needed to determine qualification.
Points percentage over a specific period
To analyse a run of matches, use only the games selected. If a club earned 13 points in its last 7 matches, its points percentage was 13 ÷ 21 × 100 = 61.90%. When comparing teams, check that they played the same number of matches and that the regulations award the same number of points for wins and draws.
