How to Calculate xG and Interpret Chance Quality in Football
xG, or expected goals, estimates the probability of a shot resulting in a goal based on thousands of similar attempts. Learn how this figure is calculated, how to analyse a match and what its limitations are.
What is xG?
xG stands for expected goals. Each shot is assigned a value between 0 and 1, representing its estimated chance of resulting in a goal. A shot with an xG of 0.20 has an approximate 20% chance of finding the net in similar situations. A team’s xG is the sum of the values of all its shots.
How is xG calculated?
The calculation starts with a historical database containing thousands or millions of shots. A statistical model compares each attempt with similar ones and learns which characteristics increase or reduce the likelihood of a goal. Common inputs include distance from goal, shooting angle, body part used, type of assist, goalkeeper position, presence of defenders, and whether the chance came from a penalty, counter-attack or set piece. Logistic regression models and machine-learning techniques are commonly used. In simple terms, the model calculates a probability for each shot and then adds those values together.
Calculation example
Imagine a team takes five shots with xG values of 0.05, 0.12, 0.30, 0.08 and 0.45. The total xG is 1.00. This means that, across many matches with a similar set of chances, the team would score about one goal per game. It does not mean they will score exactly one goal in that particular match: they could score zero, one, two or more. The figure is a statistical average, not an exact score prediction.
How to interpret xG
Compare the xG created by both teams to assess the quality of their chances. A team with 2.00 xG had, on average, better or more numerous opportunities than a team with 0.60 xG. The difference between xG and goals scored can also be informative: a team with 2.00 xG and no goals may have finished poorly, encountered excellent goalkeeping or been unlucky; a team with 0.40 xG and two goals was highly efficient, but may struggle to repeat that performance. For a more reliable analysis, look at several matches rather than just one.
How to use xG in an analysis
xG should be considered alongside the number and type of shots. Ten shots from outside the box may pose less danger than three attempts from close range. It is also useful to separate penalty, set-piece and open-play xG, since these situations have different probabilities. xG for helps measure attacking chance creation; xG against helps assess the quality of the chances conceded. The difference between the two, known as xG difference, summarises the balance of chances but does not replace analysis of the match.
Limitations of xG
Each provider uses its own database and model, so figures can vary. Some models account for the positions of defenders and the goalkeeper, while others use only the location and type of shot. xG also does not directly measure shot quality, emotional pressure, the power of the strike or tactical decisions that do not end in a shot. The figure is therefore best used as a contextual tool. It shows the average quality of chances, but cannot by itself explain everything that happened on the pitch.
