How qualification for the Copa Libertadores works in Brazilian football
Qualification for the Copa Libertadores depends mainly on the Brasileirão and the Copa do Brasil. The number of places can change when continental competition winners have already qualified through the national league.
Which competitions award Libertadores places
In Brazil, Copa Libertadores places are allocated mainly through the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa do Brasil. As a rule, the highest-placed Brasileirão teams qualify, while the Copa do Brasil winners also secure a place. The Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana winners are guaranteed a place in the following edition, even if they finish outside the Brasileirão qualification places.
What G4, G5, G6, G7 and G8 mean
These labels indicate the highest Brasileirão position that qualifies for the Libertadores. G4 means the top four qualify. If the Copa do Brasil winners are already in the G4, their place from the domestic cup is passed to the next team in the league, creating a G5. The same can happen with places awarded to the Libertadores or Sudamericana winners, extending the qualification zone to G6, G7 or beyond.
The difference between the group stage and the qualifying rounds
Not all Brazilian qualifiers begin at the same stage. The higher Brasileirão places and the places awarded to domestic cup winners normally lead directly to the group stage. The final qualifiers enter the Libertadores qualifying rounds, a knockout stage before the main competition. To reach the group stage, a club must win two-legged ties in the preliminary phase.
How the Copa do Brasil place affects the table
The Copa do Brasil winners receive a Libertadores place. If they finish the Brasileirão in a position that already qualifies, that place does not go unused: it is passed to the next club in the league table. For example, if the Copa do Brasil winners finish third in the Brasileirão, the team just below the original qualification zone may gain a place, provided no other redistribution rule applies that season.
What happens when a Brazilian club wins the Libertadores or Sudamericana
The Libertadores winners automatically qualify for the following edition to defend their title. The Sudamericana winners also qualify for the following year's Libertadores. If either winner has already qualified through the Brasileirão or Copa do Brasil, their domestic place moves down the league table. As a result, the number of Brazilian clubs in the Libertadores can increase in some seasons.
How to follow qualification during the season
The Libertadores qualification zone shown in league tables can change as the Copa do Brasil, Libertadores and Sudamericana progress. To interpret the table, check which teams are still competing in those tournaments and which clubs already occupy Brasileirão qualification places. The final allocation is confirmed when the league ends and all title winners affecting the distribution of places have been determined.
