How does the play-off work in football? Understand the formats and criteria
The play-off is an additional stage offering a final chance to qualify for a competition. The format varies depending on the tournament: it may involve a single match, two-legged ties or short group stages.
What is a play-off?
Play-off is the term used in some Spanish-speaking countries for a repechage. In football, this stage brings together teams that failed to secure direct qualification but can still progress to the next round or earn a place in the competition.
Who plays in the play-off?
The participants are determined by each competition’s regulations. They may include teams finishing just outside the qualification places, sides eliminated in an earlier stage or national teams given a second chance. League position often determines the fixtures.
How are the matches played?
A play-off can be decided by a single match or over two legs, home and away. In a single match, home advantage may go to the higher-ranked team or be decided by a draw. In a two-legged tie, each team plays once at home, with qualification decided by the aggregate score.
What happens if the tie is level?
If the aggregate score is level, the regulations may provide for extra time and a penalty shoot-out. Some tournaments have a specific tie-breaker, such as the better record in the previous stage. The away-goals rule is no longer used in many competitions, so the regulations should be consulted.
Play-offs in club and international competitions
In domestic leagues, play-offs often decide places in the final stage, promotion or survival in a division. In international competitions, a play-off may determine the final places at a World Cup or another continental tournament. The number of places and the format vary from edition to edition.
A simple qualification example
Imagine a play-off involving four teams in two ties. The winners advance to the next stage. If the ties are played over two legs, a team that wins 2–1 and then draws 0–0 finishes with a 2–1 aggregate score and qualifies. If the aggregate is level, the competition’s stated tie-breakers apply.
