How to convert football match times between Brazil’s time zones
Find out why a match listed for today may appear on a different date in your state, and learn how to check the local kick-off time without confusion.
Start with the time zone shown in the fixture list
Football websites usually display kick-off times in Brasília time, identified as BRT or UTC−3. Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Porto Alegre use this time zone for most of the year. If the match is listed as 21:00 and you are in one of these cities, no conversion is needed.
Learn the Brazilian time zones most commonly used in football
Brazil has four time zones. Fernando de Noronha uses UTC−2, one hour ahead of Brasília. Brasília and most of the country use UTC−3. Manaus, Cuiabá, Campo Grande, Porto Velho, Boa Vista and Rio Branco use UTC−4, one hour behind. Acre and parts of Amazonas use UTC−5, two hours behind Brasília. Check the municipality when you are in Amazonas, as the state spans more than one time zone.
Convert from Brasília time
For Fernando de Noronha, add one hour. For locations in UTC−4, subtract one hour. For Acre and municipalities in Amazonas that use UTC−5, subtract two hours. A match at 19:30 Brasília time kicks off at 20:30 in Fernando de Noronha, 18:30 in Manaus and Cuiabá, and 17:30 in Rio Branco.
Understand when the match date changes
The date changes when the conversion crosses midnight. A match scheduled for 00:30 on Sunday in Brasília takes place at 23:30 on Saturday in Manaus and Cuiabá. In Rio Branco, it would be 22:30 on Saturday. Conversely, a match at 23:30 on Saturday in Brasília kicks off at 00:30 on Sunday in Fernando de Noronha. That is why the today’s matches section may vary according to the city set on your device or website.
Check the website’s time zone and configured city
Before using a fixture list, look for indications such as “Brasília time”, “local time” or “UTC”. Apps generally use your phone’s time zone, while national broadcasters and websites may retain Brasília time. If the fixture list differs from the TV or stadium schedule, check the match city and the time zone shown next to the kick-off time.
