Brasileirão card average: how to calculate and interpret it
The Brasileirão card average shows how many bookings and sendings-off occur per game. It helps assess the disciplinary profile of teams, referees and matchweeks without turning an isolated statistic into a hasty conclusion.
What is the card average?
The card average is the total number of cards recorded divided by the number of matches analysed. If a matchweek produced 50 yellow cards across 10 games, the average was 5 yellows per match. Red cards can be recorded separately, as they are much less frequent and have a greater impact on the game.
How to calculate it
Use the formula: total cards ÷ total matches. To calculate a team’s average, add up the cards it received and divide by the number of matches played. Example: a team with 27 yellows in 9 games has an average of 3 yellow cards per game. It is also useful to separate cards received, opponents’ cards and the match total.
Which period should you use for the analysis?
The full league table provides a more stable overview, but it can hide recent changes. A sample of the last five games shows the current disciplinary trend, although it fluctuates more. Ideally, compare both: the Brasileirão’s overall average and the recent average. Suspensions, a change of manager, a relegation battle and a congested fixture list can alter the number of fouls and cards.
Why does the average vary from match to match?
Playing style has a major influence. Teams that press high, contest many midfield battles or spend longer defending tend to commit more fouls. The context also matters: derbies, decisive matches and close games tend to produce more physical confrontations. Refereeing plays a role too, as each referee has their own criteria and frequency for penalising fouls, dissent and time-wasting.
How to interpret yellow and red cards
A yellow card does not necessarily indicate indiscipline. It may result from a tactical foul to stop a counter-attack, a late challenge or dissent. A red card requires greater attention: it may follow two yellows or be a straight dismissal. When analysing a team, check which players receive the cards, what positions they play and whether suspensions are recurring in key areas of the team.
Where to find reliable data
The official match report for each game is the safest source for confirming cards, sendings-off and the minutes when they occurred. Statistics websites help compile figures by competition, club, player and referee, but it is advisable to check discrepancies against the CBF match report. For a simple analysis, create a spreadsheet with the date, opponent, home team, yellow cards, red cards, fouls and referee for each match.
