Best attack in the Brasileirão: how to identify the most efficient team
The best attack in the Brasileirão is generally the team that has scored the most goals in the league. However, the analysis becomes more accurate when it considers matches played, goals-per-game average, decisive players and the context of the table.
What it means to have the best attack
In the Campeonato Brasileiro standings, the best attack is the club with the most goals scored. The statistic usually appears in the table as GF, short for goals for. If two teams have scored the same number of goals, they share the position until one scores again or falls behind.
Where to check the best attack in the Brasileirão
The CBF's official table lists each team's goals for from round to round. Statistics websites and sports pages also update this data. For an accurate check, confirm that the table is for Série A, identify the season and see how many matches each club has played. When matches have been postponed, teams may have played a different number of games.
Goals per game prevents unfair comparisons
The total number of goals is the simplest official criterion, but the average shows productivity per match. Simply divide goals scored by the number of games played. A club with 30 goals in 15 matches has an average of 2.00 goals per game. Another with 32 goals in 18 matches leads in total goals, but has a lower average of 1.78.
A strong attack does not depend only on the top scorer
A top scorer with many goals helps, but does not explain a team's attacking strength on his own. It is worth looking at how many players have scored, how many assists the team has produced and whether the goals come from build-up play, counter-attacks or set pieces. Squads with more attacking options tend to be less affected when a forward is suspended or injured.
Why the best attack may not lead the league
Goals scored are only part of a team's campaign. A team may attack brilliantly but drop points if it concedes too many goals or draws matches it could have won. For that reason, compare its attack with goals conceded, goal difference and points. Goal difference is calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored and usually gives a better indication of a team's overall balance.
