Best defence in the Brasileirão: how to identify the team that concedes the fewest goals
In the Brasileirão, the best defence is generally the team that finishes the championship having conceded the fewest goals. To go beyond the table, it is worth comparing clean sheets, average goals conceded per match and the context of each edition.
What defines the best defence
The most direct ranking uses total goals conceded. If one club conceded 25 goals and another conceded 28, the first had the best defence in the championship, even if it was not the champion. This data appears in the table as GF, goals for, and GA, goals against. To find the best defence, look for the lowest number in the goals-conceded column.
Why the average number of goals conceded matters
Total goals against works well when all teams play the same number of rounds. The per-match average helps compare interrupted campaigns, tournaments with different formats or partial periods. Simply divide goals conceded by matches played. A team that conceded 12 goals in 15 matches has an average of 0.80 goals conceded per game.
The Brasileirão format changes historical comparisons
The Brazilian Championship has had different formats throughout its history, including group stages, knockout rounds and varying numbers of participating teams. Therefore, comparing only total goals conceded across decades can be misleading. In the era of the round-robin league, which began in 2003, comparisons are simpler. Since 2006, Série A has featured 20 clubs and 38 rounds, making it possible to compare campaigns with the same number of matches.
Goals conceded do not measure only the centre-backs
A strong defence depends on the whole team. The goalkeeper can prevent difficult shots, but defensive protection also comes from full-backs, centre-backs, defensive midfielders and pressure from the forwards. Possession, territorial control and fewer turnovers near their own penalty area also reduce the risk. Therefore, the club with the fewest goals conceded does not necessarily have the most highly rated centre-back pairing in the championship.
Metrics that complement goals against
Clean sheets show how often a team kept its opponents scoreless. Shots conceded, shots on target faced and saves by the goalkeeper help explain whether the defensive system allows little or relies heavily on the goalkeeper. Expected goals against, or xGA, estimates the quality of the chances allowed: a low figure indicates that opponents created few dangerous opportunities.
How to check the best defence in the current season
Use the official table or a reliable statistics portal and sort the clubs by goals conceded, from lowest to highest. Also check how many matches each team has played before comparing an ongoing round. At the end of the championship, the lowest total of goals against defines the best defence of that edition; if there is a tie, both teams share that statistical distinction.
