What is the head-to-head record in the Brasileirão?
The head-to-head record compares the results of matches played by two teams level on points or close together in the table. Find out how this tiebreaker works and why it can change the standings.
Definition of the head-to-head record
In the Brasileirão, the head-to-head record refers to the results of matches between two specific teams. If Flamengo and Palmeiras finish with the same number of points, for example, their matches against each other may be considered, according to the criteria set out in that season’s regulations.
How the matches are compared
In a round-robin league, each team faces the other twice: once at home and once away. The comparison may consider the points won in those matches. A win is worth three points, a draw one and a defeat none. In some regulations, goal difference or other details from those matches may also be taken into account.
Head-to-head is not always the first tiebreaker
The order of tiebreakers varies according to the Brasileirão regulations. In recent editions, the standings usually consider wins, goal difference and goals scored before head-to-head results. Therefore, two teams can finish level on points without their matches against each other being used immediately.
A simple example
Imagine Team A and Team B both finish with 60 points. Team A won the first match 2–0, and the second ended in a 1–1 draw. If the regulations specify head-to-head results as the next tiebreaker, Team A has the advantage after taking four points to Team B’s one.
When the criterion can decide positions
The head-to-head record can decide a Copa Libertadores place, a position in the table or survival in Série A, provided the clubs are level on all previous criteria. To find out which rule applies, consult the official regulations for that season, as the order and criteria may change.
Difference between head-to-head and overall record
The head-to-head record considers only matches between the clubs involved in that competition. An overall record may include matches from other seasons, tournaments or friendlies. Therefore, the overall history between two teams does not replace the results recognised under the Brasileirão regulations.
