What is a high line in football and how to identify this strategy
A high line is a strategy in which the defence positions itself well away from its own goal, usually near the halfway line. Learn how it works, how it relates to pressing and why it can leave space in behind the centre-backs.
What a high line means
A high line is an advanced defensive position for the back line. The centre-backs and full-backs stay closer to the halfway line than to their own penalty area, reducing the space between the defence, midfielders and forwards. The team aims to play with a compact shape and keep the opposition away from goal.
How a high line works
When the team loses the ball, the defenders push up or remain advanced to limit passing options. The idea is to make the pitch smaller and win possession back quickly. In many cases, a high line is used alongside intense pressure on the player in possession, but the two strategies are not the same: one describes the defence’s position, while the other describes the act of pressing.
The link with the offside rule
The defence can push up together to leave an opposition attacker offside when the pass is played. This requires coordination between the players. If one centre-back stays behind his teammates or moves at the wrong time, the attacker can receive the ball in behind the line with no one marking him.
Advantages of a high line
The team controls more territory and reduces the space between the lines. It can also win the ball back near the opposition goal, increasing the chance of creating a quick shot. A high line helps maintain a compact block, with the different units close together and less ground to cover.
Risks and how the opposition can exploit it
The main risk is the space behind the centre-backs. A through ball, a fast run or a quick switch of play can put the attacker one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The strategy is more vulnerable when pressure on the ball fails, when the defenders lack pace or when the opposition has players capable of attacking that space.
How to identify a high line during a match
Watch the position of the centre-backs when the team is out of possession. If they stay near the centre circle, push up to follow midfield and leave little space between defence and attack, the team is playing a high line. You can also spot the strategy when the goalkeeper plays as a sweeper to cover balls over the top and into the space behind the defence.
