What do over 2.5 goals and under 2.5 goals mean in football?
Over 2.5 goals and under 2.5 goals classify matches by the total number of goals scored. The 2.5 line prevents a draw in the calculation: the match finishes either above or below it.
What are over 2.5 goals?
Over 2.5 goals means that a match had more than 2.5 goals in total. In practice, this means three or more goals scored by both teams combined. A 2-1, 3-0, 2-2 or 4-1 scoreline falls into this category.
Which scorelines count as over 2.5?
Over 2.5 includes all results with at least three goals: 3-0, 2-1, 3-1, 2-2 and higher-scoring results. Meanwhile, 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0 are not over 2.5, because they contain no more than two goals.
What are under 2.5 goals?
Under 2.5 goals means that a match had fewer than 2.5 goals in total. Therefore, matches with zero, one or two goals qualify. The most common scorelines in this range are 0-0, 1-0, 1-1 and 2-0.
Which scorelines fall outside under 2.5?
Any scoreline with three or more goals falls outside under 2.5. So 2-1 does not qualify, as it adds up to three goals. Results such as 3-0, 2-2 and 4-1 also count as over 2.5.
Why is the line set at 2.5 goals?
The decimal separates the two outcomes without allowing an intermediate result. Since there are no half-goals in a final score, the total will be either two or fewer, or at least three. Each match therefore fits into just one classification: over 2.5 or under 2.5.
