What is xG in football and how to interpret expected goals
xG stands for expected goals. It is a metric that estimates the likelihood of a shot becoming a goal based on similar chances from the past.
What xG means
xG stands for expected goals. Each shot is assigned a value between 0 and 1. A shot with an xG of 0.10 has roughly a 10% chance of resulting in a goal; in many models, a penalty is rated around 0.75 or 0.80. The figure does not say exactly how many goals a team will score. It measures the quality of the chances created and finished.
How xG is calculated
Data companies compare thousands of previous shots and identify which characteristics are associated with goals. Depending on the model, factors include distance from goal, shot angle, body part used, type of assist, defenders’ positions and the match situation. A close-range, central shot following a low cross or pass tends to have a high xG. A long-range effort from a tight angle tends to have a low xG.
A practical example
If a team takes five shots with xG values of 0.20, 0.15, 0.10, 0.08 and 0.05, its total xG is 0.58. This does not mean it will score 0.58 of a goal. It means that, given the profile of its chances, it would be expected to score roughly one goal every two matches with a similar volume of chances. If the score was 2–0, the team scored more goals than its chance creation suggested in that game.
Team, player and goalkeeper xG
A team’s xG is the sum of the values of its shots. It helps distinguish territorial dominance from genuine chance creation: possession is not worth much if the shots are poor. For forwards, xG shows the quality of the chances they receive and finish. For goalkeepers, xG conceded is the total value of the chances allowed by the defence. The difference between goals conceded and xG conceded can point to difficult saves or an unusually efficient run of opposition finishing.
The limitations of the statistic
xG models are not identical. One platform may include more variables than another, so the figures can differ. xG also does not capture every aspect of a move, such as line-breaking passes, off-ball pressing or a positional error before the shot. In a single match, goals and xG can be far apart. The metric becomes more useful when analysing a run of games alongside video, tactical context and other data.
