What is the relegation zone in football?
The relegation zone consists of the teams that finish the league in the bottom positions and drop to a lower division. Find out how it works, which teams occupy this section and which criteria determine the standings.
Definition of the relegation zone
The relegation zone is the section of the table occupied by clubs that would be relegated if the competition ended at that moment. In the Brazilian Championship, these teams drop to the lower division the following season. As a result, positions can change from one matchweek to the next.
How many teams are relegated
The number depends on the competition regulations. In the Brazilian Championship Serie A, the bottom four teams, from 17th to 20th place, are relegated to Serie B. In other tournaments, two, three or four clubs may go down. Some leagues also have relegation playoffs.
How the table determines which teams are in this section
The standings are usually based on points: each win is worth three points, a draw earns one and a defeat earns none. When two or more clubs have the same number of points, the tiebreakers set out in the regulations apply, such as wins, goal difference and goals scored. The exact order may vary.
How a team escapes the relegation zone
A club leaves the relegation zone when it overtakes a team above it or earns enough points to climb the table. A win may lift a team out of the zone, but this also depends on the results of its rivals. In one matchweek, a club can win and still remain among the bottom teams if others also pick up points.
The relegation zone and the threat of going down
Being in the zone indicates relegation at that moment, but does not confirm a team’s drop before the end of the championship. A team outside the zone may also be under threat if it is only a few points clear of the first team in it. The situation is settled mathematically only when no remaining results can change the relevant positions.
What does Z-4 mean?
Z-4 is a common way of referring to the bottom four clubs in Serie A, occupying 17th to 20th place. The expression appears in tables, news reports and broadcasts. In competitions that relegate a different number of teams, the abbreviation may not correspond exactly to the section defined in the regulations.
