How Many Points Are Needed to Qualify for the Libertadores via the Brasileirão
There is no fixed points total for qualifying for the Libertadores. The number depends on the places available that year and the points gap between the contenders in the Brazilian Championship.
How Libertadores Places from the Brasileirão Work
As a rule, the Brasileirão awards direct places in the Libertadores group stage to the top four. Teams finishing immediately below them may enter the preliminary round. The exact number changes when a Brazilian club wins the Libertadores, Copa do Brasil or Copa Sudamericana and has already qualified through the league.
The Most Common Points Range
To finish in the top four, the benchmark is usually around 60 to 65 points in a 38-match league season. To reach the expanded qualifying group, often referred to as the G6, the range is generally around 55 to 60 points. These are historical benchmarks, not guarantees: a highly balanced season may require fewer points, while a fierce battle at the top can raise the cut-off.
Why the Number of Places Can Increase
Brazil can have more representatives because the Libertadores and Sudamericana champions earn a place in the following Libertadores edition. If those champions have already finished in a qualifying position in the Brasileirão, the league place moves down by one position. As a result, a G6 can become a G7 or G8. The Copa do Brasil winner also qualifies for the Libertadores, without automatically taking a place from the Brasileirão table.
How to Calculate the Points Needed During the Season
Multiply the number of remaining matches by three and add the result to the team’s current points total. This is the maximum it can still reach. Then compare that total with the points tally of the clubs competing for the final Libertadores place. You must also consider head-to-head fixtures and goal difference, which is the Brasileirão’s first tie-breaker.
Practical Projection Example
A team with 48 points after 30 matches has eight games remaining and can reach 72. If the projection for the final qualifying place is around 58 points, it needs at least 10 points from those eight games to reach that mark. Even so, qualification depends on the rivals’ results and the tie-break criteria.
