What is a play-off in football and how does it work?
A play-off is an additional stage that gives some teams one last chance to qualify for a tournament or remain in a division. The format depends on the competition: it may involve a single match, two-legged ties or a contest between teams from different countries.
What does play-off mean?
A play-off is an additional contest to decide places that were not filled directly during the main stage. It generally involves teams that came close to qualifying or finished in mid-table positions. In Brazil, the term may also be called a playoff or promotion play-off, depending on the competition.
How does it work in practice?
The organisers decide who takes part, how many places are available and the match format. A play-off may be contested over a single match, two legs, home and away, or a short group stage. In the event of a draw, the regulations may provide for extra time, a penalty shoot-out or tie-breakers.
Play-offs in World Cup qualifying
In qualifying campaigns, play-offs usually bring together national teams that failed to secure direct qualification but finished in positions that guarantee another opportunity. In some editions of the World Cup, ties are played between teams from different confederations. The number of places and the format change each cycle, so the regulations for the relevant edition should be consulted.
Play-offs in national competitions
In national leagues, play-offs can decide promotion to a higher division, top-flight survival or qualification for a subsequent stage. A common example is having teams that finished near the top but outside the automatic promotion places compete for a spot in knockout matches. The same term can also be used for a tie between a team threatened with relegation and another seeking promotion.
Is a play-off the same as a second chance?
The idea is similar, but a play-off does not mean that every eliminated team returns to the tournament. Only the teams specified in the competition rules take part. The place is not automatic either: the team must win the scheduled ties to confirm qualification or survival.
